Facebook ads for an independent book publisher
A four-person publisher knew books and art history and nothing about advertising. A week after the ads went live, sales doubled.
Chandra, Independent publisher. Recorded January 2025.
Chandra works at a small independent publisher — four people, deep expertise in books and art history, and by her own description no knowledge at all of advertising or marketing on Facebook.
They had been doing what most small teams do: posting on social media, occasionally boosting something. It produced interactions. It did not produce revenue. Engagement that never turns into orders is the most common way for a small business to spend a year on social media and end up nowhere.
Properly structured campaigns went live and took about a week to get through the learning phase. Sales then increased by 100 percent from the ads alone.
The distinction that mattered here is between attention and demand. Boosted posts are optimised toward people who engage with posts. A conversion campaign is optimised toward people who buy. Those are different audiences, and no amount of budget turns one into the other.
For a team of four with no marketing background, the honest constraint is not skill but time. Meta’s ad platform changes constantly, and learning it properly is a job rather than an afternoon.
If you have a product people love and social activity that never converts, the gap is usually campaign structure rather than the product or the audience.
In Chandra’s words
“We have a lot of knowledge about books and art history, but absolutely none about advertising and marketing, especially on Facebook.”
“When we would boost ads they would get some traction, but seeing that translate into dollars received wasn’t happening.”
“It took maybe a week for the ads to learn, and then our sales increased 100% just from those ads.”
